How gracious is our God to give us commands that speak directly to the core of our struggle with sin and its effects in the human family?

Here’s what I mean:

adam-eve-snakeWhen Adam and Eve fell into sin, what did God pronounce as part of the curse upon them? Read in Genesis 3 –

“Your desire will be for your husband.”

And to the man –

“…and you shall rule over her.”

Our core issue in the marriage relationship is a lack of respect and support (from the woman who is constantly drawn to and tempted to usurp her husbands authority and take matters into her own hands) and a lack of love (from the man who is constantly drawn to and tempted to rule harshly over his wife). All issues in marriage could arguably be traced back to these two core struggles that were introduced as part of the fall.

Think about it, men.  When you fail to love your wife properly, could your sin not be most times traced back to a lack of gentle, love-driven, servant leadership?

Think about it, ladies. When you fail to love your husband properly, could your sin not most times be traced back to a lack of respect, honor and biblical submission?

Now, fast forward with me to the New Testament and you will find these very same two core struggles being addressed by the commands given directly to Christian husbands and wives-

“Husbands love your wives…” – Ephesians 5:25 (italics mine)

“Wives respect your husbands.” – Ephesians 5:33 (italics mine)

How gracious is our God to give us two commands (among many more) that so pointedly address the very core of our struggles in the most intimate of all earthly relationships; marriage?

God knows our hearts. He knows that Adam and Eve’s root issues are the same for every couple, in every place, at every time.  And he knows that our struggles and challenges in marriage today are no different.  Be encouraged by the power of the Gospel, that gives you renewed hearts and the ability to delight in the commands of Christ in your marriage.  May we be people with marriages full of love and respect for the watching world to see and come to Christ.
