“Every minister of the word is both evangelist and pastor.  Because gifts differ, one man may be particularly blessed in reaching those outside of Christ while another may have his greatest effectiveness in instructing believers.  So pronounced may be the divergence of these two ministries that the first may be called an evangelist and the second a pastor.  Both men, however, are called to minister the Word as members of Christ’s witnessing church.  The evangelist who disregards the  church is guilty of the same error as the pastor who ignores evangelism.  The gospel must still be heralded even among those who know it best, and teaching that builds saints in the faith is also used of the Spirit for the conversion of sinners.  We need both evangelists and pastors but above all we need men who are both: pastoral evangelists and evangelistic pastors.”
