Someone's having a good time!

We wrapped up Backyard Bible School today and I already miss the kids.  The Lord was so good to send us so many children, visitors, helpers, great weather, fun, food and fellowship!

We talked today about living as one of the True King’s servants.  Living in a kingdom demands certain practices, certain behavior from it’s citizens.  Think of these things like eating, breathing, playing and sharing.

Eating –

We must feed on God’s word, the Bible.  We won’t last very long without physical food, we can go even less time surviving without feasting on the words of our King.  God’s book, the Bible, gives us everything we need to know.  It may not give us everything we want to know, but it reveals what we need to know and what it does tell us has eternal consequences.  We’ve got to read the book to get the orders from the King.  The King will always tell us the truth and guide us down the right path.

“All Scripture is God breathed and is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” ~2 Timothy 3:16

Breathing –

Thankfully, all the children agreed that breathing was something they did often and was essential to their well being.  In fact, we all concluded that we probably breathed in and out millions of times each day.  It’s obviously an ongoing exercise.  This is the picture of prayer that the Bible paints for us.  We are to continually be thanking, praising and requesting with our great God and King.  There is no follower of the King who does not talk to him on a daily basis.  He speaks us to us through his word and we speak to him through prayer.

“Pray continually.” ~1 Thessalonians 5:17

Playing –

We all love to go to a friends house.  Even more fun when we have friends over.  Sometimes we like to be alone, but typically no one dislikes being together with others. We were created for something called fellowship.  First with God, but with others too.  If we are followers of the King, we need to be around his other followers.  This journey toward the heavenly city is a difficult one.  We need the help and encouragement of others and they need the same from us.  The local church is not a negotiable option.  It is the very visible manifestation of the bride, body and building that is Christ.

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the day approaching” ~Hebrews 10:25

Sharing and Telling –

I love to see my children excitedly share the latest events from their lives with their friends at church or around the neighborhood.  Something great, or sad, or weird has happened and they can’t wait to tell the story to someone.  This his how we are wired.  It’s the same as a servant of the King.  Except it isn’t our story we’re telling, it’s His.  We are to go forth, as his servants, telling others about him, his kingdom, the foolishness of our sin and the glory of his work to rescue us from it!  Something wonderful has happened on a cross about 2000 years ago and it changes everything.  We are to go out and tell the world about how awesome the Lord most high is and that he is the great King over all the earth.

“I pray that you will be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ” ~Philemon 6

The Lord is good.  What he does is good.  He was very kind, gracious and generous with us this week by giving us the opportunity to proclaim the truth while having some great fun together at the same time.  We give him praise, for he brings salvation upon the earth.
